Introducing our new portable herringbone teat seal trailer.
Â
Two tonnes of quality steel is enabling us to tackle heifer mastitis this season. As long as there is a workable set of yards we can come to where ever your heifers choose to graze. With fast loading times and a tighter, more secure fit of heifers in the trailer also speeds up processing time compared to running them through your sheds. Walkways are attached if ear tagging or pregnancy diagnosing are required.
Â
Why bother about heifer mastitis?Â
Â
Heifer mastitis has been shown to cause an 8% decrease in production as a whole and result in an individual lower milk and fat yield next lactation. Heifers consistently have a higher risk of clinical mastitis than older cows just after calving. Production costs of getting a heifer to the shed is estimated at upwards of $1500. Heifer mastitis costing between $100 - $300 for every 1st case of the season. These costs coupled with time and loss in production can be a frustrating business in an animal yet to milk.
Â
Teatseal is a non antibiotic, inert substance that provides a physical barrier immediately on insertion, preventing the entry of pathogens into the udder throughout the dry period and at calving. Studies have shown teatseal administered to maiden heifers 4-6 weeks pre-calving reduces subclinical mastitis at calving by 65% and clinical mastitis in early lactation by 50%. Teatseal will not affect calves if they suckle.
